چکیده

Hypericin, Cyanobacteria, Photosynthesis, Photodynamic Action The photodynamic action of hypericin on photosynthesis and respiration were monitored in Synechocystis sp PCC 6803 and Synechoccus ATCC 6311 (Anacystis nidulans). An oxygen electrode was used to measure net oxygen evolution or consumption. The amount of hyperi cin required to inhibit photosynthesis was quantitively determined. Photosynthesis was com pletely inhibited in Synechocystis when the molar ratio of chlorophyll/hypericin was about 70:1. Higher concentrations of hypericin did not stop the uptake of oxygen, but rather stim ulated the process in the light. Hypericin was readily washed out of the cells forming no permanent associations in the bacterial cell. Hypericin inhibited electron transfer and conse quently oxygen production by PSII particles. For half maximum inhibition of oxygen evolu tion, with PSII membrane particles, the molar ratio of chlorophyll/hypericin was about 10:1.

Analysis of the gene encoding the RNA subunit of ribonuclease P from cyanobacteria.

The genes encoding the RNA subunit of ribonuclease P from the unicellular cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, and from the heterocyst-forming strains Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 and Calothrix sp. PCC 7601 were cloned using the homologous gene from Anacystis nidulans (Synechococcus sp. PCC 6301) as a probe. The genes and the flanking regions were sequenced. The genes from Anabaena and Calothrix...

Regulated nitrate transport in the cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans.

Intracellular accumulation of nitrate, indicative of the operation of an active nitrate transport system, has been measured in intact cells of the cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans. The ability of the cells to accumulate nitrate was effectively hindered by either ammonium addition or selective inhibition of CO2 fixation by DL-glyceraldehyde, with the effect of either compound being prevented by...

Oxidation of c-Type Cytochromes by the Membrane-Bound Cytochrome Oxidase (Cytochrome aa(3)) of Blue-Green Algae.

Respiratory particles containing an aa(3)-type cytochrome oxidase were prepared from Anacystis nidulans, Synechocystis 6714, Synechococcus lividus, Anabaena variabilis, Nostoc sp. strain MAC, Nostoc muscorum, and Mastigocladus laminosus. Oxidation of c-type cytochromes by membrane preparations of the different blue-green algae was observed using purified cytochromes from horse heart, Candida kr...
